Summer’s just around the corner and it’s time to start thinking
about the care of your car.
Maintaining a Cool Engine
Your vehicle’s engine is equipped with a cooling system to protect
it from the intense heat produced by daily operation. The
cooling system protects the engine by regulating the operating
temperature range. To ensure that your vehicle’s engine parts
will work properly, you need to have regular service and maintenance
performed on the cooling system. A proper cooling system
maintenance program includes the following:
|
-
Check engine belts. When inspecting the
belts, look for cracks or missing sections or segments and
replace if needed.
-
Check for leaks or corrosion in and on the
radiator.
-
Check the heater and radiator hoses for
leaks, cracks, or rotted rubber, and replace if needed.
Also, replace clamps when replacing hoses.
|
-
Maintain proper coolant levels.
NOTE:
Never attempt to
check coolant or radiator when the engine is hot.
-
The exterior of your engine should be
cleaned. Build-ups of oil and dirt can cause the engine to
run hot or hide leaks.
-
The cooling system should be drained and
refilled with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water
according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
|
 |
The time to
check your cooling system is now. Don’t wait for extremely
cold or hot weather to find out if your vehicle has
a problem. Avoid engine trouble through preventive
maintenance.
